THIS IS OUR FIRST EVENT OF THE SEMESTER!
Indie-electro Brooklynites, Telepathe will play the MPR this Saturday in a three-part showcase of genuine sonic adventurousness! Experiemental cellist, Brent Arnold will open the show, then Telepathe, then Tropical Bass House DJs, NGUZUNGUZU!

Brooklyn banshees with a brand new beat, Telepathe stand out from the NY district’s vacuum of avant-garde. Though the same stifling pursuits of local noiseniks … (more) Gang Gang Dance and Effi Briest remain, a realised pop sensibility now stands to the fore, as harmonies and chants call out with blood-curdling brilliance against their lapping tape loops and darting hooks. Years in the making, Dance Mother, the outfit’s debut full-length, waits in the wings, its makers the latest darlings to be produced by TV On The Radio’s industrious Dave Sitek.
With something of a revolving cast, it’s difficult to plot Telepathe’s makeshift roster. Initially formed in 2004 as an aside for Busy Gangnes (from prog-punk experimentalists Wikkid) and Shahin Motia (no-wave rapscallions Ex-Models), Telepathe (pronounced “TEL-EP-ATH-EE”) have seen core contributors come and go but seem to have finally found some stability with the current crux, with Gangnes, fellow Wikkid and First Nation guitarist Melissa Livaudais and Mirror Mirror’s (US) Ryan Lucero.
After releasing Farewell Forest EP and the ‘Sinister Militia’ 12″ through Social Registry last year – records indebted to the usual cast of Brooklyn and Baltimore avant-garde – recent outings ‘I Can’t Stand It’ and ‘Chrome’s On It’, recorded with Don Cabellero’s Eric Emm, suggest that, away from awkward Paw Tracks beatniks and noise-folk dilettantes, Telepathe have a newfound focus as Hot 97 hip-hop and totemic drone experimentalism collide.

Brent Arnold attacks the cello with fiery intensity and delicate subtlety, with an unconventional approach that often sounds like anything but a cello. In the service of a song he might fingerpick the cello like a guitar, pound it like a piano, or build a maze of electronic-sounding tones. His avant-garde yet populist approach calls to mind cello pioneers like Arthur Russell and Tom Cora, as well as classical/pop tinkerers like Andrew Bird and Final Fantasy and the intense instrumental music of Explosions in the Sky.
He has worked with artists including Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, DJ/Rupture, Eyvind Kang, Brand New, Karl Blau, Lenny Kravitz (YES!!!), Filastine, and many more.
After studies with Walter Gray of the Kronos Quartet and jazz violinist Michael White in Seattle, Brent found himself playing cello for indie rock darlings on the acclaimed Up Records label, and his band The Spheres made a critically-acclaimed album for them as well. Today he lives in Brooklyn, NY, performing solo and leading his group Invincible Hummingbirds.
A total must-see for conservatory students and electro/acoustic gadgetry connoisseurs alike!
LA’s Nguzunguzu kept themselves rather busy in 2009—between production work for Maluca, remixing Buraka Som Sistema, palling around with XLR8R Artist to Watch Kingdom, and hosting their insane Tuesday night weekly, Wildness, you could forgive Daniel Pineda and Asma Maroof if they decided to take it easy this holiday season. Yet the global-bass-loving pair have decided to keep their frantic schedule rolling; they’re currently in Mexico City doing some DJ gigs, and later this month they’ll be releasing a self-titled EP on their own label, Shade Business.
To commemorate their Mexico trip and new EP, they’ve put together a stellar new mix of UK funky, tribal guarachero, and other bass-loaded sounds from around the globe. The mix also includes a few selections from the new EP. Download it here.

THIS IS GOING TO BE SO FUN! PLUS, IT’S VANESSA’S BIRTHDAY SO BE SURE TO SAY HELLO TO HER.
This is the Entertainment Committee website. It is open to all members of the committee to post whatever they want. I intended this site to be kind of a promotional tool for us to post fliers for upcoming shows, information, have our own calendar and link to other related sites. If you have a show coming up, and a flier exists in cyberspace, please post it here! I mean, reviews of shows could even go here if anyone is interested in writing them. Also, internet jokes and weird videos of animals are allowed.
If you have any questions about how to write a blog post, don’t hesitate to contact me or Kabren from SPARC. He set this site up. Thanks, Kabren. We’re still getting it up and running. I think it will be cool though.
